The Basics

Where We Live, Play, Learn and Pray

0 °F

We live in the city of Makassar, on the island of Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia. On older maps you may find Maksassar listed as Ujang Padang and Sulawesi listed as Celebes. Either way, Sulawesi is the funny looking island shaped like a distorted "K".

Makassar is a city of about two million people. It is a port city and like most port cities around the world it has a certain, shall we say, edge to it. There is also a certain charm to the city that makes it feel much smaller than it is. Anywhere we go we are greeted with shouts of, "Hello mista!" (i.e. hello mister) and EB and John are well known in the local shops that we frequent.

After a lengthy search for a home that started in August when we arrived, I lucked out and found a place right on the beach. The views of the sea are mesmerizing day or night and in sun or rain. I call it our sanctuary by the sea.
